Our logo is an artist's impression of a Crowned Pigeon. Crowned Pigeons are
indigenous to New Guinea and surrounding Islands. They are the largest living
members of the pigeon family, represented by three species and three subspecies.
They produce one egg per clutch, with an incubation period of thirty days. The
Squab stays in the nest for the first thirty days and is not weaned until five
to six months of age.
In the past few decades severe storms and human encroachment has negatively
impacted their habitat. Due to their good size, they are perfect for a meal.
In the United States there is the Crowned Pigeon Cooperative Breeding Program (CB024) to ensure the captive survival of this magnificent genus. This program is overseen by the American Pheasant and Water Fowl Society (www.apws.org/) and is approved by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
